Introduction:
Welcome, dearest readers, to a peek into emotional intelligence. Today, we explore the fascinating intersection of emotions and intellect, where feelings and facts blend together in a way that is understandable
.
I went through a lot of negative tough stuff in the last several years, and throughout the healing journey it was amazing how much I was living for other people! I lived according to what they said, projected, and denied for me. Learning to set healthy boundaries - and stick with them - is one of the hardest things to do. Along this healing process came a question of if what I felt was actually so bad. It is not. I cannot express how much faster my healing happened since I checked in with myself after being invalidated by people who were supposed to be supportive....I asked myself if it was out of line to feel what I was feeling in the moment, as the recipient of the situation. The answer was almost always a resounding "no!"
Understanding your own emotions helps you to be less swayed by the opinions of others. This is healthy because this is what positive boundary setting is all about - emotional intelligence. I wanted to learn more about it, so here we go!
1. The Marvelous Link between Emotional Intelligence and Success
Emotional intelligence, or EQ, refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions and those of others. It is an essential ingredient for success in various domains of life, be it personal relationships, professional endeavors, or even self-growth.
Research has shown that individuals with high EQ tend to navigate social interactions with finesse, maintain healthy relationships, and make effective decisions under pressure. In fact, a study by Goleman et al. (1998) revealed that emotional intelligence accounted for a staggering 67% of the abilities deemed necessary for superior leadership performance.
2. The Science of Emotion: A Neural Rollercoaster Ride
Emotions, those fascinating bursts of subjective experience, are more than just fleeting states of mind. They are complex physiological and psychological responses that shape our perceptions and behavior.
When you experience an emotion, your brain lights up like a colorful firework show. Regions like the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and insula collaborate in a splendid dance, orchestrating the symphony of emotions within you. So, next time you feel the thrill of joy or the rumble of anger, remember, it's your brain's way of putting on a show!
